There are so many people crammed on the football stands when we get there that I instantly want to leave. Scott and Annie both notice Audrey and Colin waving at us from their seats before I have a chance to run, and so we head over to them instead of going to hide in the bathroom like I want to.

I am brave and intrepid. I wish I was at home in bed living as a hermit.

“Heya,” Audrey says quite perkily, too perkily.

“Heya,” Annie says back, a suspicious look on her face. “How are you both doing?”

“We’re okay,” Audrey says.

Colin’s completely silent next to her, Ray-Bans covering his eyes. He’s wearing black pants and a black turtleneck like it’s become like his uniform these days.

“Where’s Heather?” Annie asks. She looks around as Scott goes to say hey to some of the guys from the band.

“She said she’d be here in a bit,” Audrey says.

“No doubt she’s planning on a grand entrance to make this all about her, too,” Colin says, and I notice a bitterness in his voice as it cracks a little.

Audrey doesn’t seem to hear what he’s saying and carries on chatting with us, but Annie and I are both staring at Colin. He seems so emotional. I’m a bit shocked, especially considering how angry he’s been with Adam the last few days. I thought he hated him. Maybe Annie was right with her first theory. What if they were totally doing the sex? But then, if that was the case, he definitely doesn’t look like the murderer. Despite Annie’s crime-of-passion theory.

“I just can’t believe he’s gone, you know,” Audrey says. “It’s amazing how many people are here.”

For the first time, I look at exactly who is here and realize that there’re loads of girls I’ve never seen before. Girls who don’t go to our school. Some of them are wearing uniforms for schools in other counties. Exactly how far and wide had he spread his “seed”?

I can practically hear Annie thinking the same thing next to me as we scootch up on the benches and Scott comes back over to sit with us. Before we have a chance to say anything else, the school brass band silences the entire field with the opening bars of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” Almost every girl here is silently nodding their head and sniffing along, possibly all of them thinking about how they’ll always love Adam.

Next to me, I hear sniffs and assume it’s Audrey, but when I look over, it’s Colin, nose red, tears running out from under his Ray-Bans. He tries to wipe them away and stay composed before anyone sees him, but it’s too late.

I pass him over a tissue from my bag, and he looks at me gratefully. He takes his glasses off, and his eyes are so puffy that it looks as if he’s been crying for hours.

“Thank you,” he whispers.

I look at Audrey, who’s just staring straight ahead, her sunglasses stoically in place, and I wonder whether she’s hiding something similar under them.
